A prayer to Saint Joan of Arc

Holy Maid of Lorraine, you heard God when the world was loud with war, and you obeyed. Stand with me now. Obtain for me a listening heart, the courage to do the will of God, the purity to keep a clean conscience, and the faith to trust Him to the end — even when the court of this world is against me. Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us.

For courage

Saint Joan, you rode toward Orléans with a banner, not a reputation. You were wounded and you returned. You stood before learned men who meant to break you, and you would not lie. Pray for me in the battle I cannot fight alone. Teach me not to wait for fear to leave before I move. Make my way plain, as yours was made plain, and keep me faithful in small obediences until the large ones are asked. Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us.

For those who serve

Patron of soldiers, remember all who stand under arms this day: those who keep watch, those who are afraid, those who are far from home, those who carry wounds that do not show. You loved your standard more than your sword. Keep their hearts from cruelty. Guard the prisoner and the civilian. Give commanders wisdom, and give the least of them the knowledge that they are seen. Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us.

For the imprisoned and the accused

You sat in irons at Rouen and still spoke as a free child of God. You told your judges that a prisoner may lawfully try to escape. You would not call true what you knew to be false. Remember those in cells, those awaiting trial, those who have been judged wrongly, and those whose names have been taken from them. Be near the friendless. Ask for them a just hearing, and a heart that does not despair. Saint Joan of Arc, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Eternal Father, you gave the Church Saint Joan of Arc, who heard your voice and was not ashamed of it. Send your Holy Spirit upon me as I keep these nine days with her. Through her prayers, give me a brave heart and a clean one.

  1. In the fields of Domrémy a child learned to listen. Before she was a soldier she was a daughter who went to Mass, gave her bed to the sick, and waited on a voice she did not invent. All vocation begins in attention.

    Saint Joan, obtain for me the grace to hear God in the ordinary day, and to know His voice from my own noise.
